Children’s National Medical Center, Washinton, DC

Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC) is the exclusive provider of pediatric care in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area with 5500 employees caring for over 360,000 patients each year from the region, nation and world. Children’s National is proudly ranked consistently among the best pediatric hospitals in America by US News & World Report and the Leapfrog Group.

The Challenge:

Originally, CNMC used a paper-based system for performance evaluations. Unfortunately, this system proved to be inefficient, ineffective and a burden on the entire organization due its time-consuming nature and the inability to track, retrieve and provide statistical data for analysis. Senior Administrators required the strategic goals to be implemented through all levels of the organization, all necessary data to be captured and tracked with online statistical reporting and to put the system into operation as cost-effectively, as possible. In addition, the Human Resource staff also needed online job descriptions, a formalized evaluation process and easy tracking and retrieval of information.

The Solution:

Children’s National Medical Center implemented the Tower Resource Management System to meet the criteria required by the organization’s personnel and administration. Now, there are consistent, online job descriptions, an automated performance review process and the strategic goals and objectives are integrated throughout all levels of the organization. Automatic reporting functionality allows the immediate retrieval of pertinent statistical information when requested by administrators and managers. According to one staff member, “Senior Administrators are happy over the savings and the help from the statistical reporting and the fact that all is automated rather than manual, as before.”

A CNMC management staff member also acknowledged, “The Tower Resource Management System was the best choice we could have made. It was the most cost-effective and the Tower support team absolutely makes a difference. They are very good at making suggestions, helping us think through our processes and taking our current processes and putting them into the Tower Resource Management System.” CNMC is currently in their second year using the Tower Resource Management System and has integrated their merit-based incentive programs into the system’s compensation module.

The Results:

  • Administrators have a consistent, automated, easy-to-use, integrated system for job descriptions, performance evaluations and competencies.
  • A formal performance evaluation process.
  • Elimination of paper documents.
  • Statistical reports available for analysis.
  • Strategic goals and objectives are fully integrated and applied through all levels of organization.
  • Incorporation of merit-based incentive programs into the Tower Resource Management System.
  • A working relationship with customer support who is “responsive, flexible and nimble at meeting our needs.”
